One year

Mackie, you turned one year old on Sunday. Truth be told, there were times this year when I wasn’t sure either one of us was going to make it this far. But you and I have prevailed, and things are just getting good.

While I make Chewbacca noises in the background

Video, as promised. This is Mackie quickly, seamlessly, and loudly spanning the emotional range one encounters while trapped in a truck moving 75 miles per hour: laughter, tears, and barely-contained frustration.

Also in there is Owen disclosing the state of his bowels. You’ll be pleased to know that the cab remained unsullied for the duration of the trip.

Hello, world

hi!

That’s Mackie’s foot sticking up out of the sling there.

(Like how I’ve totally dispensed with the lists? Sticking out the daily posting to the end, but that theme has run its course.)

Holiday Domesticity Protection

Have a safe Easter, my Supa friends.

(p.s. I always take every precaution.)

Heartland express

heartland

Funny the things one gets nostalgic for: I-75 South in the winter, huge grey sky, snow blowing across the highway, miles and miles of farmland and nothing but tractor-trailers to punctuate the view. I could drive up and down this stretch of road all day.

family selfportrait

This is my new favorite picture of all of us. Cormac is asleep — see his wee little face? — but otherwise this is each of us, quintessentially: me, shaggy and laughing; Iain, trying not to smile; and Owen way up in the business end.

My husband’s skull finally arrived in the mail

Taung child, with trousers

For Christmas, my parents gave my husband a reproduction of a skull specimen of australopithecus africanus. My husband is a biology teacher who is extremely interested in the study of evolution, so this makes perfect sense. We were expecting it by Christmas, but it didn’t arrive until this week.

The specimen is called the Taung Child, and was discovered in 1924 in South Africa. It is believed to be of a three year old child. It fits in the palm of my hand. It’s crazy to hold that in my hand, and then look at my own three year old, who has a huge head in comparison, and think that they came from the same distant ancestor. Kind of the same feeling I get when I take him to the zoo.

RAYGUNS

If Owen had his way, his whole life would be split between waffles, Toy Story, and running around shooting lasers at people.

In honor of my doctor’s looky-loo today

take a photo, it’ll last longer

My friend Kristin told me to tell him that the camera adds ten pounds. Hee.

first cereal

first cereal

Smiled for the camera! Didn’t actually ingest anything, though. Apparently doesn’t like solids because banana and applesauce went down the same way (which is to say, not at all).
