(This post was just going to be about books I am reading but I had to show you this miniature that Iain made to show me what my new bookshelves will look like when he builds them. Cue: “Awwww.”)
Anyway. Books I am reading/have recently read:
- Nurture Shock, Po Bronson. Reminds me of a great Weird Al tune called Everything You Know Is Wrong.
- Still Life: Adventures in Taxidermy, Melissa Milgrom. A Mary Roach-esque trip down Dead Animal Lane.
- Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare. Crossdressing, mostly.
So! Now you go. I’m due for another visit to the library and I need you to tell me what to get.

Wow, I love that miniature! I hope it gets used for a dollhouse.
One book I recommend to everyone is “The Book Thief” by Markus Zuzak. It might make you cry, but it’s amazing. It might be in the YA section at the library.
I read Nurture Shock and I really liked it. I thought the stuff about language development and identifying intelligence in children was really interesting.
Hi Supa,
Any mom with little kids should read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. - I am now inspired to grow as much as possible, and have just learned to can fruit and jam.
olive kitteridge. that’s the name of the book. loved it. house on mango street, and the brief wondrous life of oscar wao. those are 2 good ones i can think of.
next up is the gargoyle, which is for my book club. should i email you our ‘10-11 list?? these ladies always pick good stuff.
Thanks for the recs, gang! Am writing them down right now.
Tina, I have House On Mango Street (and another cisneros) on my bookshelf already! good pick.
Grace, I am definitely ready to learn how to can. We preserve a lot of our garden in the freezer, but there’s something about mason jars that’s just so appealing.
kate, i agree with you on that chapter. Made me think back to my own experience with gifted and whether they even knew what they were doing.
thanks for the tip, melissa. My kids love the children’s section, so browsing YA to my heart’s content will be no prob.
I see awesome dollhouse building in Iain’s future!
Did you read ‘Outliers’? I found it interesting from a parenting perspective.
I’m still trying to figure out what I’m going to read on my vacation & enjoying these suggestions.
Haven’t read Outliers yet, Alicia. Sounds like a Malcolm Gladwell? I’ll check that out!
