Library haul: oh cool! edition

So last week I left the kids with Iain and wandered off to the library, as I love to do. I picked up a copy of Miranda July’s short stories (No one belongs here more than you) and ran out of ideas. As I was browsing the posted list of New York Times bestsellers for ideas …

A DINOSAUR CAME OUT OF THE MEN’S RESTROOM AND ATE UP ALL THE PATRONS! OMG

Just kidding. Duh.

… PAT ROBERTSON BEGAN SINGING KARAOKE UPSTAIRS BY THE DISPLAY OF GOSSIP GIRL NOVELS!

Hee hee. As if.

… A HIGHLY LOCALIZED WEATHER SYSTEM SOAKED EVERYONE IN THE BIOGRAPHY SECTION WTF!

Whatevs, that would never happen.

No, what happened was that a lovely woman named Paula, a librarian, recognized me from my blog. From my blog! A real reader out in the real world. Even better was that she sent me home with an armful of good picks to last me a couple weeks.

Without further ado, last week’s haul:

library haul from last week.

In order of reading, from the bottom:

Not pictured: yet another issue of Entertainment Weekly

I saw you once in the Target parking lot, but I was already driving away. And I thought it would be creepy to say something …

I really enjoyed The Dive From Clausen’s Pier — and now I will look into the rest of these!

@jen: You shoulda said something! I hope I didn’t have my Parking Lot Face on (you know, GRRRR).

@jen (the second): definitely. Good so far.

How neat! You got quite a haul.

I love “Clausen’s Pier” and “Dogs of Babel,” and seem to have lost my copy of Maggie Mason’s book. I’m adding the rest to my Amazon list now!

the Atwood is actually pretty good. I was pretty glued to it. Usually I am not a fan of her writing.

Seeing this list, I would also suggest Blindness by José Saramago.

@mary it was cool. and good recs, you’d be wise to check them out.

@katie haha. yes, you had a heads-up on it, I should say so.

@ada i will write that down in my Notebook Of Things To Check Out.

Try the “mistress of the art of death” series by Ariana Franklin, if you like historical fiction. Damn good writing, good history, and a punky, spunky heroine!

Read on vacation. No - INHALED on vacation. I hope she continues the saga! (Two books so far.)

Life of Pi is so insane. I have the unabridged audiobook if you’re interested, and if I can figure out a way to send it.
