sewing: whipup and project list
I’m strangely happy to see one of my finished works on whipup.net. I’ve been reading that site since they launched, and have gotten so much inspiration and so many tips there.
Also, I can’t remember what post it was where I was talking about my long “want to make” list, but I just found the notebook I wrote it in. Here are just the ones I wrote down — this doesn’t count the amorphous ideas I’ve got going on the back burner of my brain as well.
- knit-bottom zakka sack (finished! pic to come)
- easy sweater (knitty’s “tubey” — thanks otter!)
- lunch bag
- fabric box(es) (or bucket)
- smock
- favorite things “cute skirt”
- sew u buttondown shirt
- built by you wool coat
- quilted watchband/watch
- crocheted rug (started)
- granny square throw (started and ripped out … eh.)
- bibs for mac (bend the rules sewing pattern)
- ‘wee jacket’ (bend the rules sewing pattern)
- quilt of iain’s old clothes
- birthday gift for sister
- attic curtains
- chair seat
- pencil cup (inspired by sally)
- ironing board cover
- psv ornaments
Phew. Do you see why it’s killing me to have to wait to have my sewing room back?
Oh and hey. Two things I want to talk about: a quilted wristband for a watch (my favorite grommeted canvas one is rusting and moldy from having gone through the wash) and making a quilt of Iain’s old clothes — khaki pants and oxford shirts, a lot of navy and plum and taupe. Pattern ideas or suggestions for either of those projects? Just off the top of your head? They’re probably not going to get started until the New Year but I like thinking up a plan nonetheless.

Those buckets are so cute. I just made a lunchsack, using quilted muslin to make it stand up. It turned out pretty well, but if I make another one I’ll be more careful about measuring. Good luck!
A friend’s mother makes quilts out of old college t-shirts. She cuts the design off the shirt, or cuts a large square around the shirt, and sews it all together into a quilt. They are really cute, and quite snuggly because of all the cotton. Not quite khakis and oxfords, but it made me think of it. And since your a mom, it seemed like something you might enjoy doing someday with Owen and Mac’s clothes. It’s definitely a space-saver! No more boxes of those old tee’s you can’t bare to throw away.
Totally corny, but it’s what popped into my head: a shirt and pants sort of ‘cut out’ or paper doll clothes sort of design over a patchwork background -in memory of the sources.
(I could do a sketch if you don’t understand what I mean.)
If you want just simple squares or triangles for the quilt, I can give you my mom’s e-mail address. You’ve seen the quilt she made out of our baby clothes (triangles); she also made one for my HS theater teacher using T-shirts & sweatshirts from various productions he did. It was so very cool! I think she has pictures of that one; it was squares, I think, with the logos of the shows on them.
That lunchsack sounds nice, nikko!
Clever idea, chair!
Those T-shirt quilts are good ideas. Weirdly, I don’t have a stash of T-shirts. I am finding that odd, myself, since I usually save everything that might have a second purpose.
love the fabric boxes… i might have to make them if i ever start crafting.. i only dream about doing so and haven’t taken the step yet… when i was little i’d start and get really into it and lose track of time then feel really frustrated and sweaty and stop haha. the quilt of his old clothes might be one of the best ideas ever… great colors too
supa, you are soooo giving me the bug. must have that book. now! off to order
will be starting a new lotta bag this week…..
thanks, christina — you should totally pick it up. It’s fun.
MOTG, that is awesome! I can’t wait to see what you make. I think the sewing bug is the most fun contagious thing you could get.
