Sewing: Wrap skirt, thrifted sheet

Posted on | August 23, 2007 14 Comments | e-mail | print

The wrap skirt pattern is from the book ‘Sew What! Skirts.’ Holy crap, what a great book. It’s not really a pattern at all; you take your measurements at the waist and hip and use a little math and a ruler to make your own custom-fit pattern. It’s pretty cool.

The fabric is a to-die-for vintage sheet from JC Penney, bought at goodwill with a 20% off coupon. I think it was a whopping $1.60, something like that. I’m thinking … what, late sixties? Maybe up to mid-seventies? I don’t care how old it is, i just know that I love it.

Anyway, turns out wrap skirts are just the greatest invention ever. Almost infinitely adjustable and far too comfortable.

Re: the last comment on your placemat pic…you make people want to sew. What is the DEAL with that? You totally hooked me and I’m a slacker. You should turn that into something lucrative…what, I have no idea.

Professional Sewing Inspirer, eh? If I could figure out how to turn that into a job I so would.

Thanks, Elizabeth! I wore it twice this week already. I love it.

The only thing cuter than this skirt is monster Owen and Alarmed Mac. Gah! So cute!

I have no problem w/regular patterns but after seeing so many great results from this book, when I stumbled upon a copy yesterday, I snapped it up. Now I want a vintage sheet as pretty as this one… or maybe I’ll have to use my fabric stash. Which would justify buying more fabric.

I love a reason for buying more fabric!

I only borrowed this from the library but I really think it should be purchased.

I love the wrap skirt and would love to make one, but I worry about there not being enough fabric in back to keep it from blowing open. Is this pattern adequate enough for that? I would like to update my wardrobe quite a bit and this wrap skirt looks like a good way to start; plus, eQuilt often has some great fabrics for sale.

Here’s the thing: it’s not a pattern! So you can give it as much coverage as you want. The instructions call for an extra 6” on each wrap piece and I found that to be plenty enough for protection against the flap factor. I’m imagining that if you wanted a little extra insurance, you could just up the inches — 8”, say, instead of 6”.

I like your wrap skirt and would like to make one. I am in New Port, Or. and there are no book stores here to look for directions on how to make the skirt. Sure would like to have some on line somewhere? Also , what kind of top are you wearing with your wrap skirt that complements it? Thanks, Samantha

Hi, Samantha! Thanks for your comment.

You can order the book online from any number of bookstores, or swap for it on Swaptree.com. If you’d just like online directions, you can start with the Wrap Skirt tutorial at SewMamaSew.com.

As for a shirt, I usually wear a light brown tissue-weight T-shirt over a tank top with this skirt.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
