Maternity sewing: the babydoll dress

Posted on | April 19, 2007 14 Comments | e-mail | print

oldnavy.com babydoll dressI told otter I’d post it eventually! Also promised in my Sew Mama Sew post. Basically, I saw this dress at Old Navy and knew I could make a maternity version for myself.

Here are some of the details:

Drafted the pattern from a few different things, but mostly Simplicity 4111. Left off the sleeves; cut the upper front on the fold; no placket. Also added the maternity modifications I made to the shirt version, and ties, and many inches of length. Back was a combination of the 4111 back and the 3835 (view A) back, no darts.

Still needs binding on neck and arms, but who knows when I’ll get to that.

This might be the last maternity sewing I do for a while; the third trimester is KICKING my ASS and I’m exhausted. Although I do have one more version of this shirt cut and ready to go … it’d be a shame if I didn’t at least piece that together in the next six weeks.*

* SIX. WEEKS. Three weeks until i’m officially term. Holy mother of monkeys do I have a lot of things to do around here before this baby comes.

I have really enjoyed all the pregnancy outfits you made. It’s inspired me that the next time I’m pregnant I’ll try the same. Thanks for all the great photos.

Holy cow, that is cute. Where’d you get the fabric? Maternity clothes in stores totally suck… and I haven’t touched my sewing machine in over three months. I think it’s about “due” for a project.

    Niiiiiiiiccceeeee. Wow.

*pretends to not be overwhelmed by terms “placket”, “darts” and “binding”.

    *fails*

P.S. Did you say TWO patterns? Holy shit.

Um.. wtf is a placket? I sew n stuff and probably used/made/found one or two in my years but.. yeah, I kinda go by instinct and looking at other stuff so I’m severely lacking in the lingo. I’ll google it so don’t bother with a response.

    How’s that for loquatious?

    Why, thanks everybody!

    1. Fabric: From the quilter’s calico section at Joann. Crazy cheap.
    2. “Placket” meaning the faced section of the front of the shirt where the buttons go. (I bothered! And I love your loquaciousness!)

And I am decapitated because my hair is still not up to Supa photography standards.

Wow. That is so cool! I wish I was even close to your (normal) size because I might demand to borrow it in a few months.

[…] Cute (maternity) dress. Not that Chantel has announced anything - Jax is only six months old, after all! I just thought it looked familiar. […]

Thanks fo delurking on my blog, it’s nice to find out who’s reading. I love your dress and personally i think it’s heaps better than the Old Navy one! Great fabric choice. I hope the remainder of your pregnancy goes well.

I love it! I know this is an older post but I was hoping you could answer me a question. I am working on a pattern and altering the shirt to be a dress, well how do you compensate for the belly? Do you add length and if so how if your going to gather at the top? Or do you add width? Thanks for the help.

    Hi, Jen!

You’ll want to add both length and width to accomodate the bump. Does the shirt pattern have gathers? If you’re making it maternity plus adding gathers that aren’t in the original pattern, definitely make sure you add at least 5” width. Also be sure to add length in the front, redrawing a curve from the new lowest point about 1-2” down on the fold to the old side seam line.

Hope this helps — good luck!

Leaving me a comment, eh? Have I mentioned how gorgeous you look in that shirt/kilt/jumpsuit/riding ensemble?
