What’s your favorite babywearing device?
This one is addressed to the ‘rents in the crowd:
I’m looking to possibly get a new sling or pouch or wrap for when the new baby comes in May, and I’m soliciting opinions. What’s your number-one all-time desert-island fave?
Feel free to post links in the comments, too. I’m hungry for that sort of thing.
Actually, I’m hungry for lots of sorts of things, but I’m guessing you knew that.

I could never troubleshoot the sling at first, but when I finally did, my son was too heavy to lug around. At nine-months and 26 lbs, my favorite carrier is the Ergo. I wish I had bought it first instead of the two slings and three Baby Bjorns because it is magic on my body. I can’t feel anything and I don’t feel stupid trying to put it on.
I recommend this thing called the “slingling”, though I really like the ergo too, and have used it a lot as a back carrier. But I doubt I would have bought the ergo if I had found the slingling first. My husband uses it, too, which surprised me. we both get asked about it all the time. No adjustments, just the most simple loop of fabric with a gentle curve, triple-enforced at the seam. When I got it I thought, damn, I coulda made this myself! But you can get three for the price of two, and still spend less than you would on a baby bjorn. I think you’d dig it. It’s at slingling.com. Here’s the best thing about it: it’s just a damn loop of fabric! You can fold it up and stuff it into your diaper bag. The ergo and bjorn are like octupi with their stiff straps and all. If you aren’t wearing them, they have a life of their own. The slingling simply slumps into a lifeless pile, just as I’ve come to expect from inamimate objects. Whew.
Thanks, dixdex. I have heard a lot of good things about the ergo, but it just looks so … strappy. i will check out the slingling, thanks!
h.insomnia, that is what i am going for — something i don’t feel stupid trying to put on!
I have two slings that I’m not using if you want to borrow! C-bot never lasted 30 seconds in them. I got a Snugli at first because it was cheaper but the Bjorns are much more comfortable and good for taking in and out the babe.
Thanks for the offer, Nat! I do have a Bjorn (somewhere — have to dig it up), so I’m really looking for something on the un- to less-strappy end of the spectrum for now. But thankya dear.
Of course, with my luck this kid will HATE being confined in anyway and therefore any sort of child-carrying system will be moot. Ha.
you should totally try the sling i have before buying anything. i can’t think of the name of it or the website, but it’s really rad. natey lived in it for about 4 months, ie the fourth trimester. seriously, if you start them from day one (or three or four or as soon as you can), it’s like the womb. anyway, we obviously have no use for it, so you’re welcome to try it.
Favorite adjustable ring sling: cotton from http://www.zolowear.com it has a pocket in the “tail” which is ultra handy.
Favorite stretchy pouch: http://www.hotslings.com - I use these a lot when they’re teensy newborns, no adjusting to worry about and very comfy. Get the stretch cotton ones. They fold up small in the diaper bag.
Favorite all purpose baby carrier: http://www.ergobabycarrier.com of course. Love this for when they’re a bit older. It is by far the most comfortable and easy on my back. I can even carry my 35 pound 3 year old in it comfortably.
