Hello, I’m Special!

Except not, not, not.
I wrote that pap a little while ago about the Balti mullets and nonconformity and blah, blah, blah, right? Full of what I thought were, while maybe not brilliant thoughts, then at least passably acceptable ones about American youth culture:
Ha ha ha hahahahaha! Salon.com has a book review today of “Hello, I’m Special,” something I’ve never read and, judging by the review, shouldn’t necessarily bother reading.
Though it is interesting.
This is what I thought was so funny:
Writing the book, Niedzviecki tells us, is partly an act of self-indictment; he has looked into himself and found the same infection of “narcissistic I’m Specialness” and “pop-culture-inspired fantasies” that afflicts almost everyone else in North America. His punk-anarchist-intellectual pose was mostly about “exuding a pretense of cool,” and it’s now time, he writes with disarming frankness, to “get on with the business of figuring out what and who I want to be.”
Even when I’m trying to find my own path, and writing about how, you know, that makes me such an individual, it turns out that being an individual in the face of conformity is just conforming to individual conformism! You really aren’t your khakis! Or maybe you are! Ack!
My brain just shorted out from all that “meta-ness.”

See there, I just made a Slashdot joke. Now three people in the world think I’m a bigger geek than I probably am.
Christ modern life is complex.

Reminds me of the cartoon you drew for the BG News oh so many years ago- perhaps it’s time for a rerun- it WAS right on….
